Harriet the Spy was Nickelodeon's first movie in 1996! Starring Michele Trachtenberg and Rosie O'Donnell and based on a book from the 1960s, Harriet the Spy made us want to buy black and white composition books, record everything in them that we saw, all whilst eating tomato and mayonnaise sandwiches! This is a "time to grow up movie" for the middle schooler sect and we ate it up with a spoon! This movie has a lot of spunk and is super creative and has some wise words of wisdom from the live in nanny aka sage Ole Golly about friendship, telling the truth, and to always be yourself, no matter what the consequences.  We'll talk about the golden age of television in the early to mid 90s when Nickelodeon was unstoppable, our own run ins with bullying, and how much we love that Harriet character even when she's cutting off people's braids and ruining their science projects! 

Sweetie is turning 36 this weekend, wohooo, so time to watch another favorite film of hers, the always wonderful, never duplicated Aladdin! From 1992, Aladdin was the 3rd Disney cartoon to come out (behind Little Mermaid and Beauty and the Beast) that completely captivated us as children. So much so, we still know every dang lyric to Friend Like Me and Prince Ali, 30 years later! Since Disney cartoons are on virtual lockdown, and you can't stream them anywhere, our lovely friend Jill who owns the DVD invited us over for pad thai, wine, and baby cuddles but to also watch the movie! So she's our special guest this week as we chat about why we love this movie so much (Robin Williams!), sing all the songs, and explore Aladdin's relative hotness and harem pants looks.  It's a whole new world, guys! 

The sequel to one of the podcast's favorite films, Big Top Pee Wee from 1988 is a real stinker! What is this movie guys?!! Suddenly Pee Wee is the owner of a farm in 1940s middle America, has a talking pig named Vance, a new girlfriend named Winnie and a degree in botany?! Well one day a storms literally blows in a circus and all hell breaks loose! Starring Paul Reubens, Kris Krisofferson, Penelope Ann Miller and ... Benicio del Toro in his first movie role as a dog, we'll talk about how we were enchanted slash terrified of this movie when we were kids, how it maybe made us hate egg salad sandwiches even though they are delicious, and Sweetie tells a story about Ron D and how he tricked her into thinking there was an actual Same Name Club out there and Kris Kristofferson was in it! Bad news guys, there isn't one! Duped! 

The 90s were a boom time for Jim Carrey! I mean the guy was unstoppable! Clowning around as Ace Ventura, The Mask, and Lloyd Christmas really catapulted him to fame. So it was only natural he'd reunite with the director of Ace Ventura, Tom Shadyac, and try something a little different. With Liar, Liar - a movie about a lawyer who's son wishes that he can't tell a lie for a day -  Jim started his everyday man plopped into wacky situation situation schitck, and hey it works both because of a fantastic and clever script, but also due to hilarious physical comedy that will no doubt always accompany a Jim Carrey performance! The guy was made to contort! We'll talk about all our favorite lines, whether Jerry could possibly be a serial killer, Jim Carrey's timeline of attractiveness, and whether this movie really falls into the Bad Dad movie trope or not.  

We're men. We're men in tight, TIGHT, tights. Robin Hood Men In Tights from 1993, is another Mel Brooks film we grew up quoting the hell out of in our youth! Spoofing the very spoofable Robin Hood Prince of Thieves (and many other films), this movie flew right over our heads in the 90s but we loved it nonetheless. From Cary Elwes, snooty yet heroic Robin, adorable Blinkin, the worst blind man ever, and even Maid Marion's ratty, red curly wig, we love it all! We'll talk about whether we think this or Spaceballs is our favorite Mel Brook's film, go over all our favorite scenes and lines, sing some merry men jams, and get right down to the everyone's favorite topic; chastity belts and what the fuck stop trying to control women's sexuality, you medieval assholes! 

Not all of the movies that shaped our childhoods are from the 80s and 90s.  We can't forget all those well worn classics that our parents made us watch and that we grew to love as well. So this week we did our oldest movie to date and probably the most famous movie in the world, from 1939 ... The Wizard of Oz! Everyone knows the story, the characters, and the iconic costumes and footwear but are we right in thinking this movie is creepy as a winged monkey now?! Jiminy Crickets!  Listen up as we attempt a sing-a-long of all the famous songs (and butcher most of the lyrics!), pick our favorite munchkin and talk about the nutty urban legends and trivia facts that have traveled with this movie over the years.  That's a horse of a different color!

1995's Batman Forever is the third installment of the Batman franchise as well as the first one not directed by Tim Burton but also the FIRST one that the Sweeties saw in the theaters! Michael Keaton is out and Val Kilmer is in as the brooding, conflicted Bruce Wayne who still can't come to terms with losing his parents or his love of bats.  We loved this movie as kids but on this rewatch realized it's maybe not the greatest? We adore Jim Carrey's The Riddler (even if he gets a bit too hammy) and Val did a fine job trying to add depth to snoozy Bruce Wayne.  However, we could do with a lot less of Tommy Lee Jone's Two Face and way, way less of way too into himself + what is with that misplaced earring Chris O'Donnell aka Dick Grayson aka Robin. We'll talk about what's our favorite Riddler costume, why is Chase Meridian such a hot mess, and warble out what we think to be the correct lyrics to Seal's Kiss From a Rose.  We'll just say it ain't pretty! We're all getting Batman Forever tattoos guys! 

Hey guys, remember when the SNL spin off movies were actually good? Well along with Wayne's World, Coneheads is up there as a SNL skit turned movie that is pretty much GOLD in our book.  Starring Dan Akroyd and Jane Curtin as Beldar and Prymaat Conehead from the planet Remulak, who find them themselves stuck on Earth after their space ship crashes into the Hudson River. They make a life here and what do you know, the American Dream can come true even if you're an alien with a pointy head and tiny chiclet teeth! Coneheads is probably best remembered for the amount of cameos it holds - actually the movie that contains the most cameos from SNL cast members. But to be fair, if you were funny in the 90s, you were in this film! We'll talk about how this movie cements our love for Chris Farley, how clever it truly is and how it's even funnier than we remember (due to the fact that we understand most of the jokes now!), and answer the age old question ... would we date a conehead? 

Tawanda!!!!! Time to head over The Whistle Stop Cafe for some Fried Green Tomatoes! From 1991, another great southern women rock movie based on the book by Fannie Flagg! This episode goes out to our fan friend Nikki, as it's one of her favorites, and while not as familiar to the Sweeties other than the traumatizing AF kid gets boot stuck in train track while steaming train comes along scene, we really love it for its depiction of female solidarity and friendship and love both sexual and platonic and it's depiction of the south during the 20s and 30s where it was fucking ROUGH for women but downright fucked up for black people.  Some great acting by Jessica Tandy, Kathy Bates and the two triple named Mary's plus a small bit with adorable fetus Chris O'Donnell! We'll talk about if Idgie Threadgood is really Jessica Tandy (come on, it is her right?), if we've ever tried a fried green tomato before, and how movies about domestic violence like this one and the ones on Lifetime Television for Women really stuck with us! 

Tonight we covered one of our top spoof comedies, 1980's Airplane! A parody of a lot of the disaster movies from the 1970s, Airplane! involves food poisoning on a jet bound for Chicago that knocks out all the pilots. The only one who can land the plane is a former war pilot with severe PTSD from his flying days.  Despite being somewhat foggy on the jokes and having to ask our dad alottta questions, this was one of our favorite movies as children.  Chocked full of play on word type jokes, silly comedy, slapstick, and pop culture references that really informed our Sweetie sense of humor.  We love love Leslie Neilson in what was his first comedic role but - don't call me shirley- wouldn't be his last! HAHA. See what I did there? We'll go over our many favorite scenes, clear up some current Sweetie confusion, and talk about spoofs through the ages and some of our other favorites. Looks like I picked the wrong week to stop sniffing glue!

1995's Goldeneye introduced The Sweeties to the James Bond franchise and while Pierce Brosnan is not our favorite bond, he does hold a special place in our heart as our first 007! Post Cold War times, Goldeneye involves a lot of angry Russians, two Bond girls that are pretty bad ass bitches (one a computer programmer and one can kill you with her legs!), and some crazy satellite missile defense system that's about to take London back to the stone age! We'll talk about our love for the franchise and the N64 video game that this movie spawned, Sweeties love for all things Russian, why Natalia took that job in the middle of nowhere Siberia, and does Celine Dion have a secret cameo in this movie?!! Bonus history lesson from Sweetie about the Cossacks and their sad fate during WW2! Nerd alert.  It's Bond time. James Bond. 

The 90s brought us a lot of spoofs of class TV shows. You got your Addams Family. Your Beverly Hillbillies. And our favorite The Brady Bunch! Spun from the classic TV show that ran from 1969 to 1974, The Brady Bunch Movie imagines the Brady family dropped into Los Angeles in 1995 - still dressed in their 70s glory and spouting all their wholesome ways.  A classic fish out of water story if we've ever heard one! The Sweeties actually saw this movie in the theater in 1995! Wow! Thus some of the sexual innuendos and boner jokes flew right over our tiny little heads! While we don't necessarily think this movie is AS funny as when we saw it way back then, we still really appreciate it for the solid spoof that it is! We'll talk about how Michael McKean seemed to be the evil guy of the 90s, how once Sweetie tried brushing her hair 100 times like Marcia Brady, and what ever happened to car jacking?? 

While Adam Sandler isn't necessarily the Sweeties cup of tea, we will gladly celebrate The Wedding Singer, the 1998 homage to the 80s as a rom com that we absolutely loved! We can take Adam Sandler in small doses, but we love his toned done portrayal of true romantic Robbie Hart, wedding singer extraordinaire, who gets left at the altar by bitchy fiancee Linda and vows off love forever. But who can say no to true love when you befriend cute as a button Julia, played by Drew Barrymore?? We'll always have a fond place in our heart for the 1980s, a truly wild decade that spawned really questionable fashion choices yet insanely catchy pop music, and while The Wedding Singer exaggerates things a bit, we'll never forget that the 80s were a great time for mullets and purple eyeshadow.  We'll chat about if the 80s really had the best weddings (banquet halls, blue tuxedos, hair band veils!), if Robbie really had any talent at all as a singer, and what is the perfect style kiss for your wedding day? Well kiss my grits, love stinks!

Get out your Victorian era hankies, it's time for another tear jerker! We're huge fans of the 1994 version of Little Women staring 90s it girl and Sweetie look-a-like Winona Ryder! We saw this movie in theaters and lapped up all the feminist undertones, shook our fists at that brat Amy especially when she decides to marry Laurie (WTF!) while sobbing hysterically when Claire Dane's sweet Beth's weak heart finally gives out! And kittens! Omg why are there so many kittens in this movie?! We'll talk about how interesting it is to watch this movie in our 30s versus when we were 8 and 11, and how we've moved from Team Laurie to Team Old German Professor Dude. I mean Laurie is a big old baby and March family stalker and needs to get a life. We'll also chat about how we've always wanted to wear a hoop skirt, how curling your hair in 1864 must have been terrifying, and how this very quintessential New England movie makes us feel so cozy inside! 

Two things that were really HUGE in 1996 were Michael Jordan (literally so tall) and Looney Tunes, so OF COURSE best idea ever let's put them in a movie together, add a dash of Bill Murray and Newman and a really sappy song by R. Kelly (cough cough trash bag) and BOOM blockbuster! So Space Jam was born and all the 10 year olds were happy! Sweety is a big fan of this film, but Sweetie the elder has never seen it all the way through yet still got the chills when MJ popped out of that space ship to the rousing chorus of I Believe I Can Fly.  We'll talk about what it was like growing up during peak MJ era (Chicago Bulls yeahhhh), how Bill Murray makes everything better, and who are favorite Looney Tune really is.   I believe I can flyyyyyyyyyy.  

Bring it On from 2000 was a huge hit! Choreographed dances, clever cheerleading puns, and girls in mid drift tops?! What is not to love?? Starring Kirsten Dunst as Torrence Shipman (craziest name ever) who takes over as cheerleading captain senior year for the Rancho Carne Toros, only to find out her predecessor Big Red stole their cheer routines from the East Compton Clovers! What will we doooo? Bring it On belongs in the realm of several high school comedies that came out in the late 90s, early 2000s and that we all went gaga for. We could not get enough of those spirit fingers or phrases like "Missy is the poo. So take a big whiff!". We'll talk about our feelings about cheerleading, our love/hate/now mostly love for Ms. Kirsten Dunst and how this movie is really a movie about white privilege that attempts to give a happy ending to all parties. Plus we'll continue one of our favorite segments aka This is So 90s, where we talk about things that defined this brilliant decade like the new VW bugs, platform flip flops, and posters of Sugar Ray. 

We'd thought it was time to go back to the 80s for our next movie selection, and more specifically 1985 when Teen Wolf starting Michael J. Fox was released! Sweety has never seen this pretty class 80s movie about a high schooler with zero self confidence and debatable basketball skills, who discovers he's actually a werewolf! Turns out everyone in school thinks it's pretty cool and lucky for him it also gives him magical powers to be basically good at anything.  So he sky rockets in popularity, gets the hot girl he's been ogling, but unfortunately becomes kind of a tool in the process.  Turns out it's better just to be yourself - and not hog the basketball - you'll make more friends that way! The Sweeties declare this a bad good movie in that it's totally cheesy and kind of a mess, but a feel good flick nonetheless! We'll try to get to the bottom of the rules of this werewolf stuff, talk about how we think Boof is the coolest female character ever, and how much we love Michael J. Fox in basically everything he does. BONUS we talk about all the great 80s trends and werewolf penis! Ahoooooooo!

Time for another 90s teen rom com! What Sweety deems her favorite high school teen movie, She's All That has got some problemos but we do love it. Trotting out the tale as old as time of man makes "ugly" girl beautiful and everyone loves her for the person she's always been we ate this shit up, much to our chagrin. I mean give us a makeover scene to a Six Pence None the Richer song and we're yours. We are weak! Starring Rachel Leigh Cook, Freddie Prinze Jr, Paul Walker, Matthew Lillard, Lil Kim (what?), Usher (what? what) and a really embarrassing hacky sack scene, we'll get pretty ranty about this one and talk about why the hell Hollywood thought glasses, a unibrow, and a funny name made you the ugly loser of the school, whose high school had a DJ and did they ever go to class, and why Freddie Prinze Jr. was the hottest shit in the mid to late '90s. Was it his perfectly waxed eyebrows and spiky gelled hair? We'll get into it one tube top at a time!
