Large Marge Sent Us

Here on the Large Marge Sent Us podcast, Sweety and Sweetie are our names and nostalgia is our game! Once a week (or more if you're lucky!) we watch movies from the 80s and 90s that shaped our childhoods and then have a sisterly chat about them. We usually sing songs and there's about a 100% chance we'll crack up with bouts of laughter. We hope you will too! So come join us and step back into a time when life was good and the movies were even better Logo created lovingly by Frankie Donlon. Follow us on Twitter @TheSweetieClub and on Facebook!

We haven't done a bonus episode in ages so we figured it was time to come back swinging. We watched two episodes of Disney's stepchild to the Mickey Mouse Club-- Kids Incorporated and couldn't stop singing! Come relive the magic of the weird fantasy concept that is the P*lace. A kids only club run by a weird guy named Riley where the house band is a bunch of kids who sing bad cover songs! In reality though, the Sweeties were obsessed with this show when we were little and we wanted nothing more than to dream of one day being a sassy lead singer of a band. Plus, who doesn't love MARTIKA and a tiny baby Stacy Ferguson aka. Fergie Ferg!

Bonus ep time! Who can forget the classic Nickelodeon game show (and it's longest running) Double Dare or it's other iteration Family Double Dare? Part trivia, part whacky physical challenges, Double Dare was like crack to kids because it involved literal hot messes in the forms of pies, slime, and all this other crud PLUS an obstacle course where you picked noses or rifled through oversized pancakes or ran around a giant hamster wheel! We watched a couple episodes, and it did not disappoint! We'll talk about how impressed we were with the level of trivia and how, let's face it, the girls dominated EVERY TIME, how we fondly remember Harvey the announcer and Robin the assistant, and how awesome the prizes were compared to cough cough Legends of the Hidden Temple where you got lollipops and shoes!

Do it Rockapella! Carmen Sandiego was one of those educational gameshows for kids that ran on PBS from 1991 to 1995 in response to a study that found out that Americans in the early 90s were a big bunch of dummies and couldn't locate the Pacific Ocean! Duh.  Three kids would compete against one another as gumshoes, new to the ACME detective agency and tracking down a crook (working for the notorious crime boss Carmen Sandiego) who stole a famous world artifact or building, etc by answering questions about world geography correctly.  These kids were so smart! There were three rounds - sort of basic question answer round, a memory like game and then the grand finale - a giant map of a continent and you have to run around the map putting light sensors on various countries in 45 seconds. Hard as hell! So turns out these kids were really smart, they gave dorky but cool prizes (woohoo an atlas! woohoo a recording pen!), and the woman who played the Chief is a badass and best part of the show! So check out some episodes on YouTube and joining for a rollicking discussion on the finer parts of this zany show + some really bad Sweetie acapella.

Continuing our bonus episode tradition of covering awesome 90s gameshows, today we bring you Global Guts! So like everyone remembers the original Guts right? 3 US kids battled it out in these wacky events, culminating in an epic showdown on the nefarious Agrocrag??! But THEN they got the bright idea to take this shit international, and kids from all over the world came to compete for a piece of the 'Crag.  So basically, like Kids Olympics! Hosted by Mike O'Malley (coincidentally also the name of one of our Dad's friends growing up!) and with overly polished ref Mo, Global Guts taught us that cargo nets, bungees, and lots of dry ice will take you far in life, but the only way to master the 'Crag is if you don't forget to push all the light sensors! We'll chat about what our cool nickname would be on the show, do some Mo impressions, and how cool it must have to get a piece of the 'Crag! Do do do do do you have it? GUTS!

Remember The Disney Afternoon?! You'd come home from school, grab your snack and plop yourself down in front of the TV to watch the most magical few hours of Television programming that ever existed....The Disney Afternoon! In this episode, we'll cover three of our favorites: Gummi Bears, Duck Tales, and Rescue Rangers and debate about which was our fave and why. We'll sing the theme songs at the top of our lungs and go off on a weird tangent about cereal. Come on and get cozy with us!

Alright Silver Snakes, it's time to grab those jungle vines, swing across a big pool of dry ice induced fog, and earn the right to scamper through LEGENDS OF THE HIDDEN TEMPLE. Airing from 1992 to 1994 on Nickelodeon, Legends of the Hidden Temple was the show for you if you could master a cargo net, had good listening comprehension skills when a giant rock sculpture told you a boring ass story about a lost Mesopotamian artifact AND if you didn't pee your pants when a temple guard jumps out of a dark corner! Join us as we discuss how drunk the host must have been to film 200 of these bad boys over 2 years, how shitty the prizes were (Hush Puppies, AGAIN!?), and how most of the boy contestants seemed jerky and probably have ghosted 25 girls on Tinder by now.  Don't forget your life pendants ....it's time to relive Legends!

In the 90s, a time of economic prosperity and a budget surplus, was there a better game show out there than Supermarket Sweep? Couples with a better than average knowledge of how much a box of Bisquick costs would vie for the chance to race around a fake grocery store and pile their carts high with Pampers, hams, and expensive hair dye all in the hopes that their cart would be the most expensive so that they could go for the big $5,000 grand prize.  Maybe it was our secret dream of being grocery check out girls but the Sweeties loved this show! We watched a few episodes the other day and boy it has not lost its luster! Tune in as we chat about the peppier than usual host, what we determined  to be the best strategies, and how we have long term goals to create epic Supermarket Sweep Halloween costumes.  Somehow we also launched into a sing-along of the Gummi Bears theme song. YOU ARE WELCOME.

Continuing with our awesome Bonus Episode series, we watched an episode from everyone's favorite show about normal people vs. body builders.....AMERICAN GLADIATORS! Join us as we talk about our favorite Gladiators, how lame The Eliminator really was, and how all we ever wanted in life was to go to a live taping at Universal Studios but it just never happened! We'll also discuss some awesome 90s commercials (raper vans! chocolate milk! 79 cent Subway sandwiches!), lament about how bullshit it was that the female Gladiator uniforms gave them perma-wedges (and possibly nip slips) AND we determine who the hottest Gladiator of them all was (NITRO 4EVER). (Uhh Sweety here, what about LASER Sweetie?)

Submitted for the approval of the Midnight Society..I call this story: The Tale of an Awesome Bonus Episode! This week Sweetie and Sweety each picked an episode from the SNICK Classic Are You Afraid of the Dark? and then talked about it. Join us, as we discuss The Tale of the Doll Maker where a dollhouse turns young girls into dolls and their creepy china hands fall off. And the Tale of Locker 22 where a kind Hippie Ghost rewrites her past after giving a foreign exchange student some magic beads. We'll talk about Sweetie's crush on Gary, the first time the Sweeties ever watched Are You Afraid of the Dark? and why it's annoying to insert a question mark into the title of a show. Just kidding we didn't talk about that, but we're realizing now it makes for annoying episode description writing.
